What is the Netgear EVA 700 Digital Entertainer?

General Product Information

1. What is Netgear EVA 700 Digital Entertainer?

The Digital Entertainer - EVA700 connects a TV or home entertainment system to your computer network. This enables streaming digital movies, videos, music, radio and photos from your PC to the entertainment system.

Intel Viiv Technology

2. What is Intel Viiv Technology?

See this NETGEAR knowledge base article.

3. Can I use my Digital Entertainer without an Intel Viiv Technology Enabled PC?

Yes, the Digital Entertainer comes bundled with Microsoft Windows Media Connect, which can serve various media files for playback on the Digital Entertainer.

4. I have an Intel Viiv Technology Enabled PC, but I do not have a Viiv-verified router. Can I still use my Digital Entertainer with my Viiv PC?

Yes, you will be able to access content on the PC via both the Intel Media Server and the Intel Viiv Zone. However, without a Viiv router, you will be unable to use your Intel Viiv PC to easily connect the Digital Entertainer to your network wirelessly. In this case, you must enter wireless network parameters manually. Please see the User Guide for instructions.

How to...?

5. Can I play music while watching a photo slideshow?

Yes! Go to the Music menu and start playing a song playlist. While the music is playing, you can go to the Photos menu and start playing your slideshow with the music in the background.

6. I would like to use a wireless connection from my wireless router to both the Digital Entertainer and Media Server, is that OK?

For streaming video, it is recommended that only one of the links be wireless, either the Digital Entertainer to the router or your media server to the router.

Connect the other device to the router using a wired connection. Having the Digital Entertainer and Media Server both connected wirelessly may degrade performance for video, but music and photo playback should be fine.

7. I'm using the TwonkyVision media server and am experiencing video stuttering, what can I do to improve performance?

Try increasing the Streaming Buffer Size (under Performance settings) to 64000 or greater to help improve the video streaming performance.

8. How can I play back protected (DRM) files bought from an online service such as Napster, MSN Music, or MovieLink?

Since these files are protected, they can only be played if served from a PC using Windows Media Connect or the Intel Viiv Media Server. Other third-party media servers will not work.

9. How do I connect my Digital Entertainer from the living room to my router for best performance?

For the best performance from your Digital Entertainer, a wired Ethernet connection will enable HD video and high resolution photos to be streamed at the highest bitrates. Secondarily, using NETGEAR's Powerline HD product provides a next generation alternative to wireline and supports all but the most demanding HD streaming and high resolution photos. For wireless 802.11G connection, you can expect to stream standard definition video, music and standard resolution photos reliably although high network traffic and interference may cause some audio/video interruptions.

10. Only one video/song/photo plays when I select it, how do I play the entire list?

To play all the files in a list, press the PLAY/PAUSE button on the remote control. Pressing the OK button will only play the selected file.

11. Can I connect my iPod to the EVA700?

Yes, simply connect the iPod's USB cable to the USB port and navigate the iPod hard drives folders until you see your music. However, you must have a "Windows formatted iPod." A "Mac formatted iPod" will not be detected properly.

12. I cannot play M4A files on my EVA700 using Windows Media Connect, but I can play it fine using TwonkyVision.

Windows Media Connect (at this time) doesn’t allow for streaming of M4A (AAC) files, so if you want to play these files on Media Connect (or Windows Media Center), you’ll need to convert them to MP3 files.
