Using NETGEAR's EVA8000 to View Protected Content
Categories: EVA 8000 Content Providers Online Media
This article covers how to view protected content via Digital Rights Management (DRM) from BitTorrent.com, as advertised on NETGEAR's Digital Entertainer HD website (this will work with any DRM'ed content, not just from BitTorrent.com.) For those that do not know about DRM, please refer to the DRM Wiki.
In this article, I will be using BitTorrent.com to purchase a movie, license it, and view it via the Digital Entertainer HD. To view DRM'ed content on the Digital Entertainer HD, you need to use a PC running Windows XP or Vista with Windows Media Player 11. The first step is to purchase a movie or other protected content from BitTorrent.com (or other content provider). You will need to install the client that came with the Digital Entertainer HD and download it with the client to the PC running Windows Media Player 11 (WMP11). I suggest downloading the latest client from BitTorrent.com and installing it on your PC.
Start the client and go to the BitTorrent.com site. Once you're at the site, download the "torrent" file that links to your purchased content and click on "Open" when prompted. This will start the client and will also ask you where to store it. After you have purchased and downloaded the file to your PC, place it in the "My Videos" directory in your "My Documents" folder as shown below:

Once you have placed the file in the "My Videos" directory, start WMP11 and start to play the content you purchased. You should be prompted for your login information for the website that the content was purchased from (BitTorrent.com in my case.) After it has been authorized, stop the playback but stay in WMP11. You need to play the content in WMP11 at least once to authorize the license and make it playable on the Digital Entertainer. Now that the content has been licensed, you must authorize the Digital Entertainer HD in WMP11. To do this, follow these steps:
In WMP11, click on the "Library" drop-down menu and choose "Media Sharing" from the menu as shown below:

In the "Media Sharing" dialog box, you should see your Digital Entertainer HD. Click on the Digital Entertainer and then click on "Allow":

After you click "Allow", there will be a green check on the EVA8000 showing that it is now authorized:

Click on the "Settings" button. This will open another window, make note of the name in the "Share media as" line (in my example, it's named "streamer.")

Click "OK" twice to close the open dialog boxes. Click on the "Library" drop down again and choose "More Options:"

Click on "Monitor Folders" button:

This will open the "Add to Library" dialog box:

Click on the "Advanced Options" button and make sure that your "My Videos" folder is listed, if not - click the "Add" button to add it (It should already be added by default.):

Click "OK" to close the dialog box. This will cause WMP11 to search the folders in the list to add to its library. Click "Close" to continue:

Now that you've added the files to WMP11, it's time to add the WMP11 shared media to the Digital Entertainer. From the Digital Entertainer's "Main Menu" select "+More->Supervisor functions->Advanced Settings->Servers and shared folders->Build network shares list." This will make the Digital Entertainer search your network for any shares that are available. Once it has completed searching, you will be presented with a list of shares that it discovered. Scroll through the list until you see a name that looks like the following: (Note: My PC's name is MCE2005 and the "Share media as" name, as noted above, is "streamer.")
MCE2005 : streamer:
You are looking for the listing with the ":" in it. If it has a "\" then that is a normal network share, not a WMP11 share. It must have the ":" in the name.
If the Media Server is not already checked, press the "OK" button on the remote to select it. Press the "Back" arrow on the remote 3 times to go back to the "Supervisor functions" menu. Now, select "Full scan for media files" to scan your network for new media. Once completed, you will be brought back to the "Main Menu."
To play your protected content, choose TV/Video->Recorded Video->Browse all Videos. Scroll down the list and press "OK" or "Play" on the movie that you just purchased. If all went well, you are now watching your protected content on your Digital Entertainer. The protected content will only show up through the "Browse" menu selection. Note that it will NOT show up if you browse your media by "Folders."
Now, you can easily enjoy watching protected content on your Digital Entertainer!
