New Competition? Microsoft teams up with Sigma Design on IPTV

New competition for the EVA platform is popping up everywhere. There is a flood of new products on the market aimed at the home consumer to bring their stored media and Internet based media to the living room TV. From standalone media streamers (like the EVA8000) to dedicated boxes that deliver movies on demand (like the VUDU), the market is heating up.

Microsoft is getting into the game by teaming up with Sigma Design to bring their own software (Microsoft Mediaroom) to the mass market. While currently aimed at Service Providers, this combination of software giant and SoC (System-On-a-Chip) manufacturer should help to raise the bar in the IPTV field. It uses Sigma's new 2nd generation SoC platform (SMP8654) and increases the performance by 50% over the 1st generation chip (a variation that the EVA8000 uses).
