Let me start by saying, given my previous satisfaction with Netgears Networking products, to be let down so much by the offerings of the EVA8000HD.

Slow Video Playback Performance when browsing through menu's.

Slow Menu Speeds.

Updates unable to be applied from multiple USB devices. Had to be applied online.

A HD Device outputting a default of 4 x 3??? With no option to set TV Ratio under advanced settings. Come on Netgear.

1.85:1 DVD Files not filling the screen when set to 16 x 9 Pan & Scan / Letterbox in any modes.

The lack of knowledge of Netgears Technical support staff regarding this component. (This may have something to do with the fact that these are off-shore call centres)

And More...

For netgear to release such an apparently immature and untested product to the market with the hope of fixing problems later with the release of software updates is a foolish move and misconceived ideal that customers will patiently await patches to fix issues and live with the problems at hand.

It seems that this site is either highly moderated by Netgear staff, or am i alone in having these problems.

Hi, TechGuy.  Welcome to MyDigitalEntertainer.  Thanks for taking the time to post your concerns about the product.  I know Netgear will be interested to know what is and is not working for you.

But first let me say that this is not a Netgear site.  You made the comment that the site is highly moderated by Netgear.  In fact, they do not moderate the site at all.  My company, Capable Networks, builds user communities like this one for companies like Netgear (check out some of our other sites).  We own and operate the site independently.  Of course, they sponsor elements of the site and participate (for instance, I'm sure they are reading this thread), but do not control the content.

I also wanted to ask you to be patient with the community, as it is just getting started.  As more people own EVA8000 units and find the site, this community will become a hub for knowledge and discussion around Netgear's entertainment products.

So, in that spirit, can anyone help TechGuy out with some solutions to some of his concerns?  Maybe there are some nobs or switches he could tweak to resolve some of them.

In some important aspects I agree with TechGuy. It appears to me that this product, inspite of it's impressive set of features and capabilities, has some serious flaws in the user interface, a lack of reliability (It crashes regularly, requiring a hard power-off to recover.) and behaviors of some of the features that make them difficult to use. The manual leaves quite a bit to be desired in explaining how to use many of the features.

 For example,

- Playing a *.mov file captured with my digital camera crashes the box

- Even though I set the box to load the library on power up and scan, I seem to need to manually load the saved library.

-It appears that the DE gets confused when I shutdown my PC. There's nothing that talks about how the DE should behave when the PC is rebooted.

- When playing a VIDEO_TS folder, you can't use the DVD's menus. You can only view it by slogging through the DVD a chapter at a time, Can't jump to a specific Title.

-When you remove something from the PC, the only way to remove it from the DE's media list appears to be a full rescan.

There are many more annoyances in the behaviors but you get the idea. Is there place where we can report these types of things where NetGear will see them and hopefully fix them.

DoctorBrown... You'll get support and answers at the official Netgear forums. Located here:

 http://forum1.netgear.com/

I'm not sure what this site here is for as Netgear has their own forums and it seems nobody even uses this site. I've been watching it for over a month and there is not many people posting.

Absolutely there is.  You're there.  NETGEAR is monitoring the feedback area of this forum, and takes all suggestions for their products very seriously.  Definitely post suggestions for improvement, so that they know what you as a user are thinking!

You're right, this forum is just getting started, so it's not nearly as active as we'd like it to be yet.  But it will be.  Although run by a third party (Capable Networks), NETGEAR officially endorses this forum, and we are working every day to get people answers to their questions and generally be a place those who own and use and are interested in the Digital Entertainer can gather.  You guys can be part of that.

If you need technical support, absolutely check out the NETGEAR support site as pardizzone suggests, but remember that there is a growing community here of people like you who can help you with day to day knowledge and experience.
