I am considering the purchase of one or more EVA-8000 units and wanted to better understand the purpose of the software that comes with it.   I have a Infrant (now Netgear) NV+ NAS which I understand can stream media without any additional software.  In addition, it runs Linux, so I could not install any Windows software anyway.

I could install TwonkyMedia NAS Add-on (http://twonkyvision.de/Products/TwonkyMedia/devices.html) if necessary.  I haven't figured out if I would need it yet.   Any NV+ users who have had experience with this?

I also have the same question regarding the EVA software if I decide to use Windows Home Server (probably the HP model).   I assume that the software will install on it (uses Windows Server 2003 as a base), but WHS already include Windows Media Connect 2.0 for streaming.  Do I need that and the EVA software also.  Any comments would be welcome.

Finally, one additional question.  I have about 200 hours of home video.  I would welcome suggestions on what would be the best format to encode this in for streaming to the EVA-8000.

Thanks for the assistance.

Jim

The only thing that you need the software loaded for is basically YouTube support. It will stream directly from your NAS and Windows Home Server. You will need to create a place on your NAS that the EVA has write access to so it can save it's library and config files or load the included software on a pc, but the pc will need to be on or be able to "wake up" if it's sleeping when the EVA tries to access it.

Also, you do not need to use the Media Connect from WHS either, just use the default Music, Photo and Video shares directly. I currently run WHS on an old pc I had lying around (bought OEM version from NewEgg.com but does not include any support from MS) and just point the EVA to the shares. You do need to create an account on the WHS for the EVA and give it a password so you don't have to enable the "Guest" account.

As far as converting you videos, what format are they in now? They may already be supported in the latest firmware.

Oh and you can load the software on the WHS but they are designed to be "headless" (i.e. no monitor/keyboard/mouse) and all configuration is done through a client loaded on a pc. You can use Remote Desktop to actually log into it but you would need to be logged in (i.e just disconnect when done, not log out fully) at all times as the Digital Entertainer for Windows software runs in the system tray. Logging out will shut it down (if that makes sense).
