Now that HBO is putting content online, I'm curious... Do you HBO? To what do you subscribe beyond basic stations? I have a pretty basic DirecTV package myself, with no extra paid programming like HBO, Showtime or Cinemax.

What about you?

Being digitally entertained...

I used to have ComCrap, I mean ComCast with HBO and Showtime (I like to watch their series and boxing). I switched to Verizon FIOS and for the about the same cost as ComCast, I now have "every" movie and sports package that Verizon offers. And Verizons Internet access speeds blow Comcast out of the water. I used to have the 6Mbit down/256Kb up with Comcast. Now I have 15Mbit down/5Mbit up for lees money. I'm about to bump it to 20/20 for the same as I was paying for Comcast.

As far as what I watch, HBO and Showtime have a bunch of great series and all are available "OnDemand" so if you miss a show or want to start watching a series, you can catch up without having to start in the middle.

Personally, I don't watch a lot of TV (either satellite or otherwise.)  If I do find a show I like (such as Bones) I usually wait for it to come out on DVD.

What's interesting about this HBO service is that I'm sure it is DRM'ed.  The content is downloaded to your hard drive, but I wonder how the EVA would handle viewing that content?  Pardizzone, do you know anything about this?  If the content downloads directly to your device, I am assuming the EVA would need the electronic license to play it back.

Interesting stuff! I love the era of instantly downloadable content - no more remembering to go back to the video store!

Well right now it will only be available for a small group and limited to Time Warner cable customers (which owns HBO). There's no info on when it will be available to all suscribers of any other cable/satellite systems other Time Warner. If they let you download it, it will definately be DRM'ed and tied to some sort of player. Hopefully it will be Windows Media Player 11 as that will allow it to be streamed to the EVA8000from the machine that holds the license. But they are talking about user account for all family members with Parental controls which leads me to believe it will some sort of customized player. If it is a separate or customized player, it might make it difficult to stream to the EVA. If they are smart they will go with WMP11 or an add-in for it so the EVA can be authorized to access it as it does now with DRM'ed content. This will definately be an interesting thing to follow. If they do it correctly, you'll see more and more entertainment companies/networks (think ABC, NBC, FOX etc) jumping on the bandwagon.

Oh, another thing is they are saying is that there will be more content available then what is currently available via OnDemand. What that sounds like to me is for example - every season of The Sopranos will be available (only the last season or 2 are available OnDemand). If they make all their previous seasons of all shows/movies, that would be an incredible amount of content available to the subscriber and more of a reasone to subscribe.

Just extended basic cable for me.  As long as I've got the networks and the standard cable networks: Discovery, ESPN, Fox News, CNN, Food, Comcast Sports, etc, then I've got all I need.  No need to pay for premium movie channels when I've got Netflix too.
