Is there a reliable codec I can download somewhere for WMP?  Do I need a dedicated player?  If so, is there one anyone would recommend?

Are people fairly partial to MKV?  It's a fairly new format (high-def-focused), no?

Download The CCCP : Combined Community Codec Pack from http://www.cccp-project.net/

Just make sure you read the FAQ first as you need to remove ant codecs you have installed that are included in the pack. You can also use the VLC player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Myself, I just used the CCCP and can watch mkvs in WMP11 on both XP and Vista.

I try to keep everything in one place too, which for me is also WMP11.  Hate to use lots of different kinds of players.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll give CCCP a try.
