I'v planed to purchase EVA 8000 but before I do that I have one question. Can I stream various types of audio or video files from a USB Drive attached to the EVA 8000 without my PC running?

Most definately! You only need your pc on with Netgear's software installed for YouTube streaming and TV Tuner support. But if you plan on running a drive via USB, everytime you start-up the EVA or plug in the drive, you will have to wait for the EVA to scan for the media files. If you have a lot of files on the drive, it can take a while to complete before you can access them.

This would be a good technique to use if you have a larger USB storage drive, also.  That's the way my setup currently is.  As I use the EVA more, I may need to store video on my external drive.

Does anyone know about how long it would take the EVA to scan, say, a 120GB external drive full of video?  Just curious to see if that's a viable option.

I don't use an external drive thats ever full but have heard that a large collection can take upwards of 15-20 minutes, maybe more depending on the total amount of files. I only use an external drive to test the file(s) before putting them out on my server. And while you can use an external drive to store your configuration data (as long as it's writable, FAT32 only I believe), it will not store the library scanned from the USB drive there or on a network share as it is considered removable. It needs to be rescanned everytime you plug it in/turn it back on. The best option is to buy a NAS or buy/build a Windows Home Server that you can throw in a closet and store your media on it. IMHO of course.....

Here in Sweden we have “green” thoughts (saving power …) but if that is the best option –OK.

Thanks guys

Just an FYI.... the EVA does not power down when you "turn it off". It only shuts off the video and audio outputs, the rest of the unit is still powered up. And for the NAS/Server, you can set it to WOL (Wake on LAN) if available and the EVA should wake it up when needed (like to run a nightly scan for media).
