Hi everyone,

I only registered earlier this evening and thought I drop a post to say "Hi".

I purchased my EVA8000 only last Friday and already have mixed thoughts on it, as it has a number of bugs / issues which are really frustrating, yet at the same time it`s something I want to work.

As time is getting on now and I`m up for work at 4.30 I`ll leave it for now and will post my problems for everything at the weekend.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to hearing from you all soon.

Regards

 Neil

Hello and welcome to the community.

Please post any issues your having and we'll try to work through them. There are many variables that can cause issues so please be as detailed as possible in describing your issues (such as network setup if streaming from pc/NAS). Also, have you checked if you are running the latest firmware? If not, you can check for it via the Supervisor menu. I would suggest you upgrade it if it isn't at the latest already as there are many improvements that fix many issues.

Hi PZ and Peter,

Thanks for the welcomes.

I had a few issues, but I found the answer to one and I managed to suss out a couple more for myself just messing about with the unit.

The answer I found on your site was the problem I was having when playing full screen movies or full screen photo slide shows. The problem was I simply couldn`t find an option to go back to full screen viewing after entering the menu`s via using the back key or the home key.

I found on here the simple solution was to press the Home key again to return to full screen, derrrrr, how silly of me not to try. I don`t know if it mentions this in the user manual or not as I haven`t read it, LOL. But I think the remote control could be better labeled.

Another issue was the weather missing from the Home Screen. I noticed another member had this problem, I decided to reinstall the original firmware from a USB key and then update to the present version via an Internet Download on the unit. This took a while to do as you`ll probably know, but my weather is now restored. I beleive PZ advised the troubled member to try Restoring The Factory Defaults. I don`t know if this works as I only read the possible solution after I messed about with it.

One of my other gripes was when viewing Photo Slide Shows. The problem was when I viewed a Folder, eg Folder 1 and played the photo`s, everything was fine. Now, when I viewed and played a Second Folder, the contents of the First Folder also appeared and so it played the contents of BOTH folders. When I viewed and played a Third Folder, it showed and played the contents of all 3 Folders and so on. I came to the conclusion when you view one Folder after another, it adds the media to the Slideshow. The solution was to press STOP when finished viewing a Folder, before entering another Folder. Do you understand what I mean? Do you know if this is how it works, or is it another bug.

I also have problems with the unit locking up/freezing when viewing media and when not viewing media and also the odd power off/restart cycle for what seems to be for no apparent reason. I`m only hoping NetGear sort themselves out and fix all these really annoying bugs as soon as possible, as I really love this unit, but the bugs simply spoil what could be a great device. I love it really, but I love to hate it when it bombs out on me.

I actually run mine from a home built Windows Home Server. The thing with Home Server I find is this. When you power on the Server, you simply press the Power button and let it run, as is is headless. Now, the problem is, the YouTube feature does not work, as you need to Log into the Server for the Windows Desktop to load up so the Netgear Digital Entertainer software kicks in. If you don`t Log in, the DE software sdoesn`t start up. I`m presently searching for an easy way to add the DE software as a Service which will run in the background when the Server is powered up, I beleive you can add applications to be ran as a Service, but it`s a little technical. If anyone has any idea`s then please pass them on.

Well, I hope this isn`t too long, but I wasn`t sure if I should put my moans down here or in the relevant forums. I think as most of my problems are sorted, I thought I`d just share them with you here.

Catch you all later.

Bye for now.

Glad you got your weather back. If it stops working again, try the reset to defaults to see if it restores it. It could also be the weather service server is having an issue.

For the Photo issue, I believe you discovered the answer (the STOP button). This clears the slideshow list, which is built as you play things.

For the lock-ups/freezing issues, check out this troubleshooting guide:

http://www.mydigitalentertainer.com/article/12074/Troubleshooting-NETGEAR-EVA...

I aslo use a home built WHS (although it's down at the moment) but I use DEW on a desktop when needed, not on the server. It is only needed for viewing protected content, YouTube and TV Tuner support (if they ever get it working). Everything else can be run without DEW. There is a couple of utilitys in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit download that may work (WHS is based on W2K3 Server). See here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9D467A69-57FF-4AE7-9...

Check these 2 utilities in the resource kit:
Instsrv.exe: Service Installer
Srvany.exe: Applications as Services Utility

Once I get my server back online, I'll give it a try but it may be a few weeks.

Right, I`m not happy.

My Weather Information has vanished again.

I have tried the `Restore System Defaults` and that does not work.

Any ideas anyone?

It's probably just the weather server being down/overloaded (I believe they use public servers) or the EVA can't connect to the net. Can you stream an rss feed or Youtube? If you can, then I would lean toward the server being unavailable.

Hi again PZ,

Yep, it`s working again now. I never tried anything with it, then suddenley it appeared again.

My RSS Feeds and YouTubes works, although not all YouTube videos work. Some appear to start then freeze and stop. I think that is probably YouTube itself.

You are probably correct in that the Weather problem may be with the Servers, it`s just a pain when it stops working.

Thanks again.
