I too jave a number of home videos on some miniDV tapes, but have yet to transfer them to my Home Server, for playback via my EVA8000.

One program I DO use a lot, as I have ripped all of my DVD collection, some 350+ movies/programs, is AVS`s Video Convertor software, which can be found here http://www.avs4you.com/

I find this software to be excellent at video conversions and can convert almost any video type to almost any video type. I use this software to rip from DVD directly to AVI/DIVX. I use this format as it seems to be the only one the lads XBox 360 can play over a Network. I find the results to be quite excellent.

I`m not sure if it can be used to transfer you videos directly from your miniDV but they also make software that will. Of course, you could use your own software of choice for that and then use Video Convertor to convert the video to a fole type of your choice.

You will find the price of registration quite cheap, and a single licence will allow to use all of the software they make, instead of the usual one licence per program.
