An extender is unit to "extend" the Windows Media Center interface from a Media Center PC to a TV via a network connection. A unit like the EVA8000 is a "media player" not an extender. An extender will only play what Media Center supports. A media player like the EVA8000 will play more formats and has more features (Youtube, RSS etc) and will play media from directly attached usb device or network share (without the need or a pc if you have a NAS).
