Currently, I am considering adding a ReadyNAS and a Digital Entertainer EVA8000 to my home network.  Two issues have come up to be addressed.  My home is gigabit Ethernet hard wired, and I am currently using the Windows Vista operating system.  In the specifications I have been able to locate, I see no reference to the EVA8000 being compatible with Windows Vista, and the Ethernet speeds listed are 10/100 and do not include the 1000 rate.  I would appreciate it if someone might confirm that the EVA8000 has been updated to address these two issues.  It seems incongruent that the Digital Entertainer would be linked to the ReadyNAS without meeting these specs.  Further, I was wondering if anyone might know the type of multi-core processor used in the ReadyNAS.  As the ReadyNAS will become the long term center of my home digital operations storing digital pictures and video, streaming and audio, its ability to interface over a long period is very important.  So, is anyone aware of any compatibility issues?Thank you.

The 100Mbit limit is in the Sigma chip used in the EVA8000. There is no need for anything faster as nothing goes above 50Mbits as shown below:

SMB: ~25Mbps
NFS: ~33Mbps
HTTP: ~42Mbps (same clip peaks at 47Mbps)
USB HDD: ~ 42Mbps
USB DVDROM (8x): ~42Mbps
(Note: the EVA8000 only supports SMB/MS uPNP)

Vista will work with the EVA8000 (at least it says it does on my box, though no 64bit support) and many people use it without issues.

As for the processor in the ReadyNAS, I assume your talking about the new Pro line. I don't know the answer and was wondering this myself as I'm looking to expand my storage. I also noticed it says it supports 6Tb on one part of the product page but further down it states 9Tb.

Pardizzone,

Thanks for the quick response.  I must confess to hoping that they will increase the ethernet and the chip speeds.  However, I get your point with regard to a wireless connection being fast enough at the current moment.  From experience, I have the concept that smooth streaming or movement of large files requires more bandwidth.  And, it would appear that I am not alone in that concept.  Why else would they offer a gigabit connection on a wireless router?

Please don't get me wrong.  I like NetGear very much.  My router and switch are both NetGear, and I am extremely pleased with their dependability.  Plus, I would like to have my server and entertainment center to be of a similiar brand.  Compatibility between companies can become a real headache.  However, at the risk of repeating myself, I am looking to build around these units and not just replace them in three years.

With regard to the ReadyNAS, I was also wondering whether you have heard about any comparisons between the operating system offered and the Windows Home Server operating system?  Is the ReadyNAS operating system all one part or is it in pieces?

Thanks again for your prompt reply.  Your knowledge of the specs is very impressive.
