Evening all,

Right, I`ve been having some grief with a new problem on my EVA8000 for a couple of weeks.

It is, basically, when I power it up, or start it up, it does not start start up.

When I turn it on at the mains, it appears dead, with nothing on the screen. I know it is getting power and doing something because the connection light on my Network switch and Router lights up. The LED on the front of the EVA8000, does nothing.

If I hold in and release the EVA8000 front button, it seems to reset the unit, as the Switch and Router light goes off, then comes on again, although there is no action from the EVA8000 itself.

I have to power it down and up again a number of times, sometimes I can be doing this for 10-15 minutes, then it might decide to start up.

I am presently trying out Firmware 2.1.81 Beta, as I was experiencing the same problem with Firmware 2.1.66 Public Release. I have also used the Recovery Tool after the unit bombed out after a Firmware upgrade.

This is most annoying and as with the other crashes and hangs, I`m now getting bored with this, and I`ll be returning this piece of crap to PC World next week and getting myself another XBOX 360 to view my movies on.

Why can`t NetGear make software for their Hardware like Apple and Microsoft do? Stuff that actually works.

Has anyone else had this problem.

Thanks for looking.

Neil.

Are you using a custom skin? If so, that could be causing the issue. I would try resetting to defaults and reflashing it. You say you tried the latest public release (2.1.66) but the latest release is still at 2.0.159... see here:

http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103254.asp

Just because you got an update from the EVA8000 interface, I wouldn't trust that release as I don't get any update when I try (still at .159). If that doesn't fix it, it may be a faulty unit. This could be caused from you cutting the power to it (the power supply is finicky and Netgear advises against constant power downs, especially pulling the power from the back of the unit as it causes arcing).

I just ftp'ed into the update site and I don't see 2.1.66 out there at all (you use the UK version correct? I check botn NA and UK directories). I would definately reflash the unit with .159 and see if your problems clear up as they seem to start after you updated it.

HI pardizzone,

Thanks for the the posts.

Yes, I use the UK version. I was originally on version .159 then I decided to try the beta .181 version and then suddenely it wouldn`t play a single video al the way through, some would not start, others would start then bomb out with a green screen, some a black screen. The was all randon behaviour. I also started getting lots of chirping and pipps on audio.

From the EVA`s Menu, I clicked on the `Internet Update` option and it came up with a newer version, when it downloaded it was 2.1.66.

I have since retried version .159 and updated again, and the .66 version is still available.

I`ll reflash with .159 again and try that for a while.

You say NetGear advise against powering down the unit. I always power down the unit when it`s not in use. In fact it`s always off and I only power it on when I use it. My Server is not always on, so if I left the unit powered up, wouldn`t that affect the media library?

I have a switch built into the mains plug, so it is always plugged in, then I just flick the switch to power it up and down. How do you turn it off then if your not supposed to? What`s the point in that? Could I have possibly damaged the unit doing this?

Oh, by the way. I totaly forgot about putting a post up about using the EVA with a Windows Home Server, as you were on about getting yours up and running again. I mentioned about running the DEW as a Service, without the need to log on. Did you ever get it going? Would you like me to put up a quick post?

Thanks again

I know there was some posts a while ago on the Netgear support forum about powering off the unit where ScholarWarrior stated it can cause problems with the power supply. The unit is designed to be on all the time (though most things are turned off when in standby mode to reduce power consumtion which is what state it's in when you press the power button). I just leave it plugged in and set to "not" scan at all. I do manual scans when I add media (that's when I even use it as it's been moved into the bedroom and I use another streamer in my main room).

As for the WHS, please throw a post up about it. I haven't had a chance to redo my server as I've been far to busy with other things (though I did get it running enough to get the backups working so my machines are backed up).

Just to update this thread.

I now have Firmware 2.1.81 Beta installed with DEW 1.8.0029 installed.

I have not powered off the unit for over a week now. I simply use the front button or the remote to turn the unit on / off (standby).

So far, it has not crashed at all, as far as I can remember. It starts up everytime and runs my movies smoothly with any problems.

So, I don`t really know what else to add, but it has got me stumpped. Maybe powering the unit on /off every time I used it caused more problems than enough, or it could be the Firmware. I may have originally installed a corrupted / damaged / dodgy Firware. Who knows?

Anyway, about the WHS DEW Service topic, I have started a new thread here http://www.mydigitalentertainer.com/forum/thread/12291/Running-DEW-Software-A... so please feel free to check it out and post up and comments.

Thanks for looking guys.

Regards

Neil.
