Hello EVA community, I need your advice.

I have 2 EVA 8000 players, and a ReadyNas 2TB storage unit. My house is new, and hard wired with Cat-5, and I also use Netgear's new Wireless N Router. My home network should be extremely high speed, however, I still have trouble at times with playing back files.

It seems that unless I restart my wireless router, and run the the DWI setup routine, that either my EVA 8000 won't see media files, OR it will have a lot of trouble accessing and playing them back.

I currently RIP DVD's to my ReadyNas in their native format (VOB) and foten, the EVA seems to get stuck jumping from different chapters on a disc. I store it in this format because I assume that by not changing file type, I ensure no loss in data, although my thinking may not be accurate.

Also, I am still able to operate the files as they would on disc, jumping to different chapters, watching the extra features and secondary disc content, which I assume I would lose if I stored the file as an AVI or some other type.

So my question is, what file format are you using? and how is it working for you?

I rip the dvd to an ISO file instead of VOB. The EVA will see the ISO as a disc image and you get all the same functions as when playing the disc. It also only opens 1 file connection where as the VIDEO_TS/VOB rip can cause multiple file accesses which can cause throughput issues. Is your EVA connected to your network via a wire or wirelessly? I ask because if you are streaming via the wireless, it's only G not N and in my testing is not fast enough for some DVD images and Hi-Def content.

Thanks pardizzone - great feedback and much appreciated.

OK, so what software do you use to rip to an ISO? I currently use DVD Fab5.

I did not know about the 'multiple file connections' that could explain a lot - good to know, thank you.

MY EVA is connected via wired (Cat5 T100) AND wireless (Netgear Wireless N). Either should be strong enough to support HD video, but I would default to wired.

Also, from what I'm reading online, it says you can't RIP copy protected DVD's to ISO format? Are you having this issue? I've never had issues ripping copy protected DVD's to VOB, but if I had to do that first and then convert to ISO, that would add considerable time to the process.

There are quite a few programs available that rip to iso, DVDFab included. From the DVDFab webpage:

Write Data: Burn existing DVD folder or ISO image file to DVD writer, or convert DVD folder to ISO image file.

Also, see this artical about ripping dvds:

The conversion to ISO doesn't take as long as ripping it. An ISO is just an uncompressed container for the files. You can look inside and extract files from them with a compression utility like WinRar. So when you create it from the \VIDEO_TS folder, it's like zipping a file up.....

Thanks pardizzone,

I was able to successfully create an ISO file, and that played back well, but only after I determined the root cause of my problem.

My desktop PC had both a wireless network connection, and an ethernet Cat5 hard wired connection. My EVA seems to only see my PC by the wireless connection.

When I'm only connecting my EVA by wired, my DEW software doesn't 'see' the EVA on my network. I can scan and detect the IP for the EVA, so I know its "on" the network, and the EVA finds my Netgear NAS, but my PC can't see it.

The wireless connection was causing video to play at a slower connection speed. When I connected my EVA wirelessly, my NAS share seemed to play video VIA my PC, and not by EVA directly connecting to the NAS, through the faster wired connection. This caused a much slower connection obviously, and seems to be the cause of the stuttering and choppiness during playback.

So, any suggestions on how to help my PC detect my EVA on my wired network?

You either need to disable the wireless connection or make sure the wired connection is first in the bindings list. You don't specify what operating system your running so here's how for XP then Vista:

XP - Go into C0ntrol Panel and open Network Connections. Click on the Advanced menu and choose Advanced Settings. Under the Adapters and Bindings tab/Connections section it lists the order of the bindings. Your wired connection needs to be the top one so highlight it and use the up/down arrows on the right side to move it to the top. Click "OK" when done, you may need to restart after changing the order.

Vista - Go into Control Panel and open Network and Sharing Center. On the left hand side click on "Manage Network Connections". Press the "Alt" key to display the menu and click the Advanced menu/Advanced Settings. Under the Adapters and Bindings tab/Connections section it lists the order of the bindings. Your wired connection needs to be the top one so highlight it and use the up/down arrows on the right side to move it to the top. Click "OK" when done, you may need to restart after changing the order.

After making the change and restarting, DEW should be able to see your EVA through the wired connection.....

Hey pardizzone,

Ok, so I've got my wired connection at the top of my list now. I also disabled my wireless connection. When I did this, my PC could not longer 'find' either of my 2 EVA 8000 on my network. I can ping each EVA from my PC, so I know they are successfully connecting to the network, but somehow my Netgear software is not "seeing" them. If I turn the wireless network back on, it sees them - sort of. The DEW systray icon lists the 2 EVA units on its little popup menu under Rooms >, but when I Open the DEW software and choose to Configure, it does not 'find' them on my network.

Its very strange that it sees them in the "tray", but won't find them during configure. Also, if I disable my wireless network, it no longer sees the EVA's in my "tray" (I'm still connected by my LAN).

Any suggestions?

The good news is, my EVA's can't see my PC, but they do see my NAS, and they both are playing back video at very good quality, with no choppiness. Network test shows 20MBPS > connection speed. So that problem is solved, when the EVA's aren't connecting wirelessly.

Hmmm.... What do you run for a firewall? Is there any exceptions to allow DEW? Try disabling any firewalls on the pc as a test. This includes things like Norton 360, McAfee etc. If it works after disabling them, turn them back on one by one to see which one may be blocking communication and add an exception for DEW.
