I'm just getting started with Windows 7, and am not 100% sure how to fix this, but I would definitely check the sharing settings on each folder that contains your media. I am sure that Win7 handles this differently. I now have access to a Windows 7 machine so I'm going to try a few things and see if I can help... stay tuned...

Having just upgraded from vista to windows 7 I have found that the eva 9150 no longer seems able to stream data from the shared files on my computer.
I have the latest eva firmware installed, and all windows drivers are up to date. The eva network test returns n/a, after a few responses at 31Mbps. I then find that all my shared folders, that the eva has tried to access, are 'locked out', requiring a reboot to set free. Note that copying files from the shared folders on the computer to the disk in the eva does work.
Has anyone else come across this problem / found a way to make it work?
cheers.
Peter
It's good to hear that this is being looked into. I have tried everything that i know what to do with on file sharing settings, as well as removing all anti-virus and firewall settings, all to no avail. By the way it's the windows 7 home edition that i am using.
cheers.
Ok, I think I found something that might help you.
Click on the start button, then enter "advanced sharing settings" in the search box. That should link you to the advanced sharing settings screen.
Scroll down and enable public folder sharing if your media files are located there. I imagine that you can change this location, but I haven't played with that yet.
Scroll down further and go to the "Choose media streaming options..." link which should be highlighted, and click on it.

You should then see a new screen specifically for media streaming options. In my system, the EVA2000 just showed up - no drivers or anything needed. It was "blocked" by default; do this on your own system and try enabling sharing services to the EVA2000.
I'm guessing this will solve your issues, but what I don't yet know is if this enables streaming of all media files no matter where they are located or if it's limited to just public folders. One way or another, if your media files are in the public folders you should be good to go. Try this out and let me know if it works.

I'm guessing my problems are slightly more fundamental than this. While the EVA9150 is clearly visible in the network list page under computer as 'living room' and under other devices as 'netgear digital entertainer elite (with big hex string)', it is not visible in the advanced media streaming screen or via the windows media player. In short windows 7 recgonises the web browser capability, the hard drive installed (and all folders within), but not the device as a platform to stream media to. Any further thoughts?
cheers
Unfortunately, I'm not sure why Windows 7 wouldn't recognize the device. It sounds really simple and basic, but perhaps you could try rebooting the EVA9150 and your PC - give them a full power cycle (unplug, wait, re-plug in, power on) and see if that helps.
Beyond that, it could be a hardware issue requiring official NETGEAR support, and you may want to contact them anyway to get a second opinion.
The EVA9150 doesn't use UPNP to access media, which I think is why you are not seeing it in the Media streaming page. i.e. It uses standard SMB protocol to access shares.
Windows 7 support on the 9150 is still in beta, and is part of the current beta firmware found over at the Netgear.com forums. If you go to the Netgear forums (http://forum1.netgear.com/index.php ) and create an account (or use your existing one), you can then sign up for the beta forum ( http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=36718 )and gain access to the latest beta software. Also you might want to do a search in the beta forum for Windows 7 to see what sort of results people are getting with the Windows 7 beta support.

thanks for the support and making sure the more obvious, but often over looked, steps were taken care of.

Thank you for the links. The latest beta has done the trick. I guess it was the SMB protocol update, which i noticed for windows 7 has been upgraded. So all working, and am once again a happy eva9150 user
cheers.
As wierd as it may sound I am glad to hear other people are having the same problem.
It sounds as if I am having the same problem.
I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit.
I can see the folders on the EVA9150's hard drive and I can copy files to it and they will play fine. I can add RSS feeds by editing the text file directly with no problems too. But the problem comes when I goto the EVA9150 I can see the shared folders on the Windows machine but I cannot see their contents.
I can plug my 1TB portable hard drive into the USB port on the 9150 and it works just fine.
Two things to make sure of when trying to use the EVA with Windows 7: 1) Make sure you are using the latest beta firmware for the EVA9150 (links in my previous post); 2) Make sure you have the share permissions set correctly.

Thanks for the reply.
I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Netgear the other day. We never could get it to see the files in the folders.
The tech said it might be something with Windows 7 Pro or that mine is the 64 bit version.
He said because he was using it with Windows 7 at the time with no problem and the only differences between his setup and mine were the ones I listed above.
We got it work with my WHS.
I'm having the same problem as above. But I'm using Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I talked on the phone for 2 hours too to Netgear and never got it working. We did download the beta version. So does anyone have any other suggestions?
And Peter I did try doing what you said but when I go to the media streaming options, the Netgear does not even show up there.
I see that Netgear said to set the share permissions correctly. Can you tell me which ones and how to do that? Thanks

Yes like I said it works fine with my Windows Home Server which was the most important think for it to work with for me. It also sees the files in the shared folders on my ASUS Eeepc running XP. I am sure it is some setting that I and the Netgear tech were missing.
Everything they said to try I had already done several times, made me not feel so stupid to know they couldn't get it working either.
@Brent - I always make sure to set the share permissions on the media folders to "public" and "read only."

I have the same problem with ReadyNas RND2150 and using Win 7 32 bit
Cant browse
i have the same problem as you people with my 9100 and there is no beta as far as i know... is it me who can't i find it or just isn't there a compatible Win7 update available yet?
i seem to have a similar issue with Netgear 9100 entertainer express i use win 7 and a WNR 200 netgear router so that one should be compatible atleast:P
If you are having problems getting the EVA9100/9150 working with Windows 7 shares, please go over to the Netgear.com forums in the EVA9000/9150 section and search on Win7. There are quite a few threads over there discussing this topic, and various solutions user have come up with.
Hi guys, dare I say it but I too have been pulling my hair out for the past week or so with the problem of win7 connecting to the once normally happy EVA9150. There has been quite a few threads all over the place regarding this issue, unfortunately most merely say to get the latest firmware or drives. Having said that, that should always be the first step, and with keen gusto two weeks ago I headed off to the relevant sites, downloaded the required updates, sent the wife out shopping, all in readiness to upgrade my new all singing "win7 gadgets" & EVA..... Oh how wrong could I have been. Without going into the plethora of issues faced & the attempts at a workaround via lots of experimentation I guess it's easier to bullet point the main problems, followed by the final working method of correction, which I hope will help users facing similar issues with win7 connectivity to the EVA's.
My set-up: 1 PC (Win7 Ultimate), 1 laptop (Vista), 1 Netbook (XP Pro), 1 EVA 9150 C/W int 500Gb HD, & previously happily working with shares on main PC (then XP pro). All connected via WRT120N router to 8Mb/s FTTH.
Upgrade to WIN7 done as fresh install with no residual files from XP in main drive, shared int drives kept intact (important to note !!).
After install of Win7, no network visibility of EVA but could see other PC's (without folder access.). Upgrade of DEW & EVA firmware made no difference other than now all PC's show the dreaded firewall warning from DEW.
Manually adding shares to EVA had no effect.
Tried all versions of EVA firmware (V2.4.68) (EU, NA, AU)with no effect other than switching auto ranging TV to correct TV format (I'm in Dubai so stuck with EU). (DEW V1.8.0035).
Tried beta versions with small noticeable effect, but not the one required, will post details of that test in Beta forum).
Main Experiment: after manually adding shares to both WIN7 & EVA, monitored LAN activity with "Wireshark" which showed that traffic was getting through, but rejected by Win7, and sent but ignored by EVA as the Ack signal was rejected by WIN7. Point of note: Win7's network "templates" of "Home", Work" & "Public" are pretty much useless if you want to do anything out of the ordinary such as Use a non MS client. The home setting will never work with an EVA unless you want to delve into the security settings and change manually. The Public works but you'l need to keep a close eye on your security settings particualrly if your running any sort of IIS, Apache or more commonly these days, an open source CMS with XAMP.
Peter's earlier post regarding the streaming settings was very close to what I ended up doing. I set up the network as a work environment, then changed the network name to "WORK" (the EVA should be set to "WORK as well"). Then in media player I opened up the streaming and low and behold the EVA can see the DEFAULT example media. The next step was a bit trickier, remember the untouched drives & folders from the previous XP install.... Win7 can see them but ignores content as the deep permissions need to be correctly set, however, WIN7 will presently (at least on my system) only allow the parent folders permission to be set from the shares settings, all child folders will also need to be set with individual permissions. The get-around is to go to each PARENT folder (in my case 3 of them music-movies-tv_shows) and delete ALL permissions including Administrators as the inbuilt system admin will supersede your settings. Then log off & back on again, once done go to each target PARENT folder and set them to share to EVERYONE with read write and at the bottom of the dialoge box there's a small check box to propagate all PARENT settings to CHILD folders, make sure this is checked. Then log off & on again, go to the PARENT folders in turn, rt clk - add to media library and the contents will begin to propagate to media players library.
Go to EVA and select "scan for shared folders", NOT "scan for media" and you should see :comp name: library name: If all is well then go up one level to "scan for media and you files will appear there. Word of caution though, if you don't have a int HD in your EVA the loading will take an eternity each time if you have lots of media, so either set to store library on int HD or onto small USB stuffed into the rear port.
Last point, the WIN7 USER & Passwords are encypted and I am unsure if the new EVA firmware has fully accommodated this as the Wireshark shows USR & PW rejects, another work around is to manually force WIN7 to send USER & Password unencrypted, if your comfortable doing this then goto Start -> Run. type gpedit.msc, select Windows Settings under Computer Configuration, select Security Settings, select Local Policies, select Security Options, go to Microsoft network client: Send unencrypted password to third-party SMB servers, set it to ENABLED. Your EVA should now accept the incoming requests.
I'm busy trying to find a simpler way to access direct PARENT folders from WIN7 within the EVA, so if anyone can help I'll send the wife off on a long shopping trip again in readiness.
Hope some of this helps.
Thanks Peter for some great posts.
Best Regards
