Which version of firmware are you running on the EVA9150? I'd recommend using the latest beta firmware since there have been a lot of fixes/changes since the last official release. (including fixes/changes to subtitles) As far as the MKV playing the external SRT, if you're using the current beta it "should" work. If not I'd recommend posting over in the Netgear forums EVA9150 beta section, since there are a lot of active users that are very knowledgable about this sort of thing.

I've got an MKV movie (ripped from a blu-ray disk) and in the same directory is the appropriate .SRT subtitles file. VLC will play the subtitles fine, but I can't figure out how to get the 9150 to play them.
