Hi people, After receiving an email from a user on another thread, and also mentioning this topic in these particular forums, I have now decided to start a thread on this. Those of you who are running the EVA8000 from a Windows Home Server may have come across the problem of having to log into the Server every time you need to run the DEW software. I have listed below, instructions (sort of) on how to install your DEW software as a Service, which runs automatically in the background on powering up your Home Server. Right, here we go. You will need the following two applications. Windows Server 2002 Resource Kit Tools - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Any Service Installer - http://forum.wegotserved.co.uk/index...ads&showfile=7 as mentioned in previous link. YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER AND LOG-IN WITH `WE GOT SERVED` TO DOWNLOAD FILES , this takes only seconds. Its best if you copy both applications over to your Server first. I copied them to the Software shares Folder, then dragged them onto the Server desktop. Now, for this to work, simply install the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools. I logged onto my Windows Home Server using the Remote Desktop Connection, then installed it from...

I just bought my EVA and had to spend much time with support in order to get Wifi working. evidently channel was no good had to be on channel 1... putting that asside I can't get the software to find my eva. I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop with virtual box. I have a vbox running xp which was what I first attempted to communicate with. My wife has an XP SP 3 laptop which also cannot communicate with our EVA. Please help. Also, what's the point of the USB ports if I can't hook up media directly to it? some what disappointed that I need to have my computer up running. to share a network device in order to use this box...it would cheaper for me to have a TV out card. I was expecting to be able to hook my external directly to the EVA and play media without a computer. I see on netgear's site that it supports torrents but for the life of me I can't figure out how... at this point I'd ratherreturn the box and get mythtv or geexbox going. please help.

My EVA sees my NAS (Maxtor) which in turn has a USB drive connected to it (the maxtor NAS) . EVA sees both drives as shares and can play content (-mp3's on Maxtor NAS, ripped DVD's and MPEG2 TS streams on USB connected drive) when I go to the ID Tag function to list the drives, I can't see them as drives. I can see the NAS in My Networks but not the USB drive, and when I choose what I can see (.mp3's on the NAS) nothing happens and nothing shows. Any thoughts?

Hi all I picked up an eva 8000 and spent a pretty frustrating night trying to complete the installation - if anyone can spot my blooper and set me straight I would be grateful! I have windows vista home premium, netgear router (not sure which - came free with my AOL subscription), and a wifi link to my pc. On the PC the link is shown as very good, the router says the wifi link is 'great'. Managed to install the entertainer at the tv end - sound & picture on the tv set and the 8000 has access to my wireless netgear router. I uploaded the latest firmware from the net via the router and can play 'clips' from the net - seems the EVA to router worked fairluy easily! At this point things went a bit astray - the eva prompted me to go to the pc and install the disk - this was done and the software loaded - I get as far as configure and the pc shows the eva alongside a checked box on the screen - I hit connect and it shows connecting for a while then states 'cannot connect'. I did try turning...

EVA-8000 Software and NAS or Media Servers

I am considering the purchase of one or more EVA-8000 units and wanted to better understand the purpose of the software that comes with it. I have a Infrant (now Netgear) NV+ NAS which I understand can stream media without any additional software. In addition, it runs Linux, so I could not install any Windows software anyway. I could install TwonkyMedia NAS Add-on ( http://twonkyvision.de/Products/TwonkyMedia/devices.html ) if necessary. I haven't figured out if I would need it yet. Any NV+ users who have had experience with this? I also have the same question regarding the EVA software if I decide to use Windows Home Server (probably the HP model). I assume that the software will install on it (uses Windows Server 2003 as a base), but WHS already include Windows Media Connect 2.0 for streaming. Do I need that and the EVA software also. Any comments would be welcome. Finally, one additional question. I have about 200 hours of home video. I would welcome suggestions on what would be the best format to encode this in for streaming to the EVA-8000. Thanks for the assistance. Jim

Had terrible trouble with my XP (SP2) Winamp 11 set-up (I dont run Media Center version). The EVA would not connect to the PC each time, when it did the show the "Music, Pics, Video" menu the next click always failed to show any content - just an error message. I downloaded Twonky and installed and have had no problems at all. Turned off Winamp sharing and didnt look back. Seems to be a problem with tagging though, the "Folders" option appears twice on the EVA and the "Albums" and "Artists" lists are not as expected. I wil try running the tagging tool on the Netgear CD and let you all know how it goes. Logan

Hi, I've bought the EVA8000 without reading the small print. I assumed it would be compatible with W2K server. I am able to see the shared drives, however, the device is unable to scan the contents. I've set the sharing permissions for 'everyone' to allow full control, change, and read. Further, I've changed the security settings for everyone to include full control, modify, read & execute, list folder contents, read, write. Also, probably related, the device is unable to use a directory to write to. Has anyone else figured out how to get this to work on Windows 2K server? Neil. P.S. I have been able to access media on a shared folder on my XP laptop

I just received my EVA8000 and found that Youtube wouldn't work. I then upgraded to the latest Beta and.. Nope.. still didn't work. I finally got around to figuring it out. If your EVA is not working for YouTube vids you need to download this file http://www.netgearbeta.com/downloads/forums/ recvr-youtube-fix.zip and run it on the machine you have the digital Entertainer software installed on. In my case it ws the same server that I use to store all my music, vids, etc. Once you run it, you should be good to go!

Having seen a friends high end digital media pc and being insanley jealous I visited my local pc-world and spotted the EVA8000! WOW! I thought no need to build another pc that'll sit near the tv, just plug n play............. Not quite! Having got home and pulled my tv out from the wall and plugged the EVA8000 in (note, it says the s video cable was included but it aint there!) and run the software on my media centre pc upstairs I expected the EVA8000 to connect wirelessly...no hope, It couldnt find my wireless network. So, back to pc world to buy a 10 meter long ethernet cable and much fun drilling holes through wall etc to thread it through (wife NOT AMUSED!) and connect to the EVA8000. Sit back and wait for it to connect, Still no joy, after many minutes of swearing at the pc during the configuration process I discovered that to connect to the EVA8000 you UNCHECK the selection (DUH!) Well it worked sort of, except Norton fire wall has to be turned off completely for the eva to find the media files, once the media is shared norton can be switched back on. So playing...

But I'm a bit dissapointed that the Digital entertainer software doesn't support Windows Vista 64bit. Because I'd like use my EVA8000 to shedule TV recordings from my PC's TV tuner card and you need the software on the PC to do that. Does anyone know if / when Netgear are planning to release a 64 bit version of the software? or Does anyone know of another way to get it installed on a 64 bit machine?

I don't have a Viiv Intel chip set, but I have an intel centrino duo with vista. I was wondering if it is possible to get my media center to wireless stream to my tv. I have connected and the EVA700 finds my music, video, and pictures on both my laptop(Windows Vista) and desktop (windows XP/No Viiv). However, when I go to Media Center on my Laptop (vista), there is an option for an "extender", but I can't set up the Eva700 as an extender, and the manual is no help. Any assistance in this matter would be appreciated. Happy D.

Hi all I am thinking about buying one of these devices but I wanted to get a little info first Here is my current setup Pinnacle Showcenter connected to pc over wireless nslu2 nas device storing media in this current set up I have to have the PC on all the time, as this runs the web server and the database for the media. I have played around with running swiss center directly off my nas device but this hasn't worked very well so I have a few questions 1) it says in the documentation that a pc is needed, does this pc run the media databse or is this stored on the eva device? i.e do I have to have a pc always connected for Eva to work 2) can the eva run just by directly streaming from a nas device? I am hoping I can just link the eva to my nas device and stream off there but I need this to be confirmed before i buy one Cheers all Mike

Let me start by saying, given my previous satisfaction with Netgears Networking products, to be let down so much by the offerings of the EVA8000HD. Slow Video Playback Performance when browsing through menu's. Slow Menu Speeds. Updates unable to be applied from multiple USB devices. Had to be applied online. A HD Device outputting a default of 4 x 3??? With no option to set TV Ratio under advanced settings. Come on Netgear. 1.85:1 DVD Files not filling the screen when set to 16 x 9 Pan & Scan / Letterbox in any modes. The lack of knowledge of Netgears Technical support staff regarding this component. (This may have something to do with the fact that these are off-shore call centres) And More... For netgear to release such an apparently immature and untested product to the market with the hope of fixing problems later with the release of software updates is a foolish move and misconceived ideal that customers will patiently await patches to fix issues and live with the problems at hand. It seems that this site is either highly moderated by Netgear staff, or am i alone in having these problems.

So, pretty much everyone knows by now that I watch vids on my EVA8000 while working out. This is my favorite way to walk through morning-by-morning season after season of my favorite shows. One tiny upgrade that would absolutely improve this experience is if the digital entertainer remembered where I left off. Every morning, when I hop the treadmill, turn on my TV, and get ready to watch something, the NDE comes back from sleep / screen saver mode to the main menu. I then have to click about 20 times to browse through my video to get to my show. This was the path this morning... TV / Video -> Recorded -> Server -> Media -> Smallville -> Season 6 -> the next episode Actually, it even took me a few extra clicks, because I forgot for a second (silly me!) that I was watching Smallville instead of Stargate Atlantis (just switched last week). Anyway the unit could be upgraded (or configured somehow) to have been sitting at the "Season 6" episode list when it woke up?

Well, I've been playing with my EVA8000 for about a week and it's just one of those gadgets that I really like and think is totally cool, but it's missing some major features - all of which have to do with CONTENT !!! This box would be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better if I could browse through RSS feeds (text/audio/video podcasts) and dynamically build a library of content that could be organized by keyword or category. Sort of a combination of iTunes Music Store and EVA interface. Part of my problem with podcasts is that I don't like having to wait for the download in iTunes and I HATE watching streaming video (with all the pixels and hiccups). I added about 30+ RSS feeds to EVA and only 4 actually worked. About half couldn't access the video content (no play button) or it was an incompatible version of the MOV file type. (I will post good RSS feeds to my blog when I create it...probably in August.) To make the EVA an absolute homerun I would add an internal hard drive and some sort of browser/subscription service so I could select and organize my favorite RSS feeds and let my EVA box...

I've had my EVA8000 for a few days now and have been running through the feature set. I've had success with Internet Radio, watching YouTube videos, and viewing/listening to my own content (photo, video, and music) via my network and through a USB connection. Being a HUGE fan of TikibarTV, I watched a few episodes from my harddrive, but then decided to hook it up on my EVA via RSS feed. Using DEFW I was able to easily add it and several other RSS feed addresses (text, audio and video). My problem with video podcasts via iTunes is the download time, so EVA seems like a great opportunity. Well, after adding a couple dozen feeds I was only able to get a few to actually load. The feeds were all visible, but only a few had the play button accessible to view or listen to the media content. I checked the feeds for info on the web, and they all seemed to be MP4 or MOV files which all loaded fine on my PC. RSS feeds (especially for video podcasts) would seem to be the best way to view content on the EVA - no hassling with downloading the content...
